In a social-history lesson, students embody connected ordinary people and negotiate with one another to experience how an era shapes individual lives.
When teaching the history of population, class, or institutions, a history teacher selects an era, location, and class size. Using local data on population, occupations, life expectancy, and wealth, the product generates a connected set of ordinary people: apprentices, tenant farmers, shipowners, servants, or shopkeepers. These are fictional lives constrained by real statistical conditions, not biographies of famous people. Each student initially receives only their character’s resources, goals, and limited clues.
Once class begins, students must approach one another to negotiate work, food, marriage, transport, or protection for their characters. Some family ties, debts, and employment relationships emerge only when both sides discuss the relevant terms. In each round, the teacher can introduce a poor harvest, taxes, illness, or a policy change, letting the class see how an institution reshapes everyone’s choices through the network of relationships.
At the end, the product projects transactions, conflicts, and resource flows onto a relationship map, then compares the outcome with historical data to review which results were typical and which were merely chance. A first version could begin with a few well-documented cities and periods, giving teachers a social-history activity that requires little setup.
