One-Button Field Pins
On a Garmin watch, field crews can capture a stream of tagged coordinates with one physical-button press and return to a map organized by task.
When field surveyors, route scouts, or outdoor enthusiasts enter a stretch where they need to log points continuously, the last thing they want is to repeatedly pull out a phone, navigate menus, and choose folders. Before setting out, they create a collection task on their Garmin watch, such as “stream resupply” or “forest-road obstruction,” and that theme remains active for the entire trip.
At each point of interest, they press one physical button. The watch immediately saves the coordinates and confirms with a vibration. The screen offers a small set of large tags, such as water source, sample, collapse, or campsite; when more detail is needed, the user can add a short voice note. The full action still takes only seconds with gloves on, in rain, or without connectivity.
After syncing on the way back, every point from the task is laid out on a map. Selecting a point reveals its tag, capture time, and linked audio; users can export it to teammates or add photos and route notes later. Points without a theme are listed separately, preventing users from returning home to a pile of unidentifiable coordinates.
The first tag sets serve hiking reconnaissance and nature observation, and voice recordings are stored only in the user’s own account. Rather than replace professional GIS, the product first removes the most disruptive step in a journey where someone needs to record a dozen or more locations in succession.
Why now
A September 5 post in r/GarminWatches asked how to quickly record many coordinates and organize them by theme. The comments had not yet surfaced an existing solution; the remaining gap is repeated rapid pinning, contextual notes, and post-trip organization. S1
Target user
The core user wears a Garmin watch for hiking reconnaissance, ecological observation, or route inspection and needs to record many locations along the same stretch. They may be wearing gloves while watching the terrain and their group. Stopping to use a phone interrupts their pace. The urgent moment is just after spotting a target, while its location is still precise and its context is still fresh.
Minimal entry point
Start as a Connect IQ device app rather than a full mapping product. Once a task is created, store its theme and tag list locally on the watch. A physical-button event triggers a location capture and immediately writes the time, coordinates, and tag. Connect IQ’s Position API can obtain location, but location events are disabled when an app becomes inactive. S2 The first version therefore requires the app to remain in the foreground and confirms each write with a vibration and sequence number. Validate wrist-based voice recording device by device; until confirmed, offer only large tags. A simple web app presents synced points and exports GeoJSON, GPX, or CSV.
Punching above its weight
Acquire initial users through the Outdoor and Tools categories in the Garmin Connect IQ store. Store screenshots can directly demonstrate glove-friendly button capture, repeated pinning, and the post-trip map. Bring an installable beta back to the original post and adjacent Garmin communities for real route testing. Offer tag packs for water sources, trail obstructions, and nature observation so users can begin immediately.

- Garmin’s native Voice Notes already records audio and attaches a GPS location. Users can access it from the controls menu or a shortcut, then view coordinates and time in the voice-note library. Garmin also states that these locations are not saved as standalone waypoints. S3 It covers the core need to leave a spoken note in the field, so geotagged audio cannot be the unique selling point. The current flow is still centered on an individual voice-note library, without a persistent task theme, rapid repeated large-button tags, or a thematic map. Nor does it turn a dozen collected points into a deliverable field-survey output. The opportunity is a complete workflow for batch collection, missed-tag follow-up, and structured export.

- COROS Pins and Voice Pins are already close to a full substitute. Supported watches can record voice pins during an activity and sync their locations to the activity track and Explore page. Users can also add photos, text, and icons, and search records by keyword. Some keywords automatically categorize voice pins. S4 This shows that recording audio on a watch, tying it to a location, and organizing it afterward is already well implemented. The main direct gap is that Garmin users would have to switch hardware ecosystems. COROS’s official flow also does not show a survey theme selected in advance and retained throughout the trip. Fixed tags for survey work, missing-tag checks, thematic bulk exports, and handoff to teammates can still differentiate the product.
How it makes money
The watch app includes a limited number of tasks and on-device pins. A personal subscription unlocks map-based organization, cross-device sync, and bulk export. Team sharing, shared tag sets, and project spaces are priced per team.
The case against
Whether third-party apps can reliably record voice from the wrist must be validated device by device. If the API is unavailable, the product must rely on tags or later phone entry, sharply narrowing its appeal. Location capture may also lag in canyons, under forest canopy, or when the app moves to the background; bad coordinates can contaminate an entire survey. S2 The offline queue must also handle low storage, duplicate syncs, and unexpected exits. Too few tags lose context, while too many slow the button flow. More importantly, Garmin’s native geotagged voice notes and COROS Voice Pins already cover much of the need. S3S4 Users will install another app only if thematic organization and reliable export are meaningfully better.
