Ride Pickup Cost Comparator
Compares the total cost and time to get into each ride option when users are rushing to a flight or leaving an event.
A mobile app for people leaving airports, stations, and large events that compares the full cost of getting from their current location into a vehicle. Users enter a destination, number of bags, and maximum walking distance, then see each service’s fare, walk time to the pickup area, estimated wait, and cancellation risk side by side on the first screen. After they choose an option, the map guides them through the appropriate exit and alerts them when a quote is about to expire or a pickup point changes. If a robotaxi can collect riders only in a designated area, the result also includes the extra detour time. Standard comparison tools compare the quotes on screen; this one compares the money and time required to complete the whole pickup process while carrying luggage.
Why now
On July 13, 2026, Hackney publicly demonstrated an app that compares real-time quotes and wait times across services including Uber, Lyft, Waymo, and Tesla Robotaxi; as of July 14, 2026, 03:23 UTC, the related Hacker News post had 31 points and 22 comments. S1S2 Meanwhile, Waymo has entered multiple U.S. airports, where pickup points may require passengers to walk, take airport rail, or reach a designated area. This shows that the cost of getting to a pickup point beyond the quote is becoming a distinct comparison variable. S3S4
Target user
People deciding which ride to take within minutes of landing at an airport, leaving a station, or exiting a large event, especially those with luggage, children, mobility constraints, or little willingness to walk far for a lower quote.
Minimal entry point
Launch at one airport or large venue. Maintain each platform’s designated pickup areas, use the user’s location and destination, calculate walking time with the Google Maps Routes API or Mapbox Directions API, and let users enter platform quotes and estimated waits manually to rank options by total time and cost.
Punching above its weight
Create searchable, location-specific utility pages such as how to reach Uber, Lyft, or Waymo pickup points from a given airport terminal, with a direct link to the comparator. Distribute them in airport, concert, and urban-mobility communities.
Competitors & gaps
- Hackney
- Already lists real-time prices and wait times from Uber, Lyft, Waymo, and other services, but it still centers on quote comparison rather than combining the walk to the pickup area, the burden of walking with luggage, and the risk of failing to meet the vehicle on time.
- Obi
- Focuses on comparing ride-hail and taxi prices across platforms, including airport trips. The opening is to start at a terminal or event exit and compare the full time and cost through to actually getting into the vehicle.
- RideGuru
- Offers fare estimates and filtering for ride-hail, taxis, and luxury cars, but is closer to a general fare calculator. This idea can focus on dynamic pickup-point navigation around airports, stations, and event exits.
How it makes money
Charge a monthly subscription to frequent business travelers, parents, and users carrying large luggage. Offer basic comparisons free, with subscription alerts for expiring quotes, pickup-point changes, and high cancellation risk.
The case against
The strongest case against this is that the hard part is not mapping but continuously obtaining real-time, personalized quotes and wait times from each platform. Most platforms do not offer public APIs suited to cross-platform comparison, while private APIs risk terms issues, account restrictions, and changing interfaces.
